Of course, being a film photographer, I use film because of it's non-linearity. It's like turning up the bass on my stereo.
 
I make black and white see differently and choose color films based on the "look" I want.
 
Given that, why would we care a whole lot about the devices we use being linear?

done enough work with these devices to understand what goes on at the
extreme low or high end of the "data". Few things (if any) in the real
world seem to be instantaneous or linear. It seems to be a matter of the
