The germane phrase is from a very famous Schubert song in which the rose
takes it revenge on the boy that plucked it/her/him, my knowledge of the gender
of German nouns is scanty.
For anyone that has a real interest in German songs there is an excellent
book called Lieder line by line which gives translations of the lyrics, but I
don't suppose you wished to know that. Michael
