ALWAYS insure your camera gear with your air carrier, and quote the "buy it or it's equivalent new" price. Those who thieve prefer to steal that which does not leave a paper trail. The best value of this type of insurance is it's deterrent value. I use Pelican cases. High bulk but the best protection.

Never - ever - put anything of obvious value in checked luggage.

Carrying the equipment on the plane is a PITA, but it's less of a nuisance
than arriving at the destination and finding that the camera etc was stolen.
