PageMaker is now InDesign. It has now superceeded Quark as the book
layout application of choice in the publishing world.
If you really need to consistently deal with a complete manuscript
with streamed text, footnotes, indices and images throughout, I
recommend you start with a straightforward book and InDesign. The
initial tasks are relatively easy, but things get a bit trickier as
you need to do more complex operations. But deep down there's a lot
that's intuitive in InDesign.
