Actually, PageMaker WAS InDesign but now PageMaker is PageMaker and InDesign in InDesign.
I used PM for YEARS and LOVED it, they turned it into ID and I never did get adept at it until earlier this year when i was forced to.
I think PM is much less overwhelming than ID but ID is what I use now.

If you really need to consistently deal with a complete manuscript with streamed text, footnotes, indices and images throughout, I recommend you start with a straightforward book and InDesign. The initial tasks are relatively easy, but things get a bit trickier as you need to do more complex operations. But deep down there's a lot that's intuitive in InDesign. -- Emily L.
