Yes, I see this as a very powerful tool. What one does with it is up to the user.

I find the seam carving tool very very attractive as well.  It's a
*tool*; you use it, under human control, to produce the results desired
by humans.  In this case, it means seeing things more clearly in photos
without completely losing the context (as you would with really tight
cropping).
