Except the National Portrait Gallery in London charges, as I said, and
that certainly isn't a scam. However, the NPG doesn't sell work as it's
a viewing gallery which does make a difference: somehow the Gallery has
to recover it's not insignificant costs.

work, then they need work to sell and the time to look at it to decide
whether or not they like it should be no charge. Now if you expect
them to sit down and discuss with you how to improve your work, that's
not part of the deal. That you should expect to pay for, just as you
would any other instruction. Be ready though. You may only get 2 or
3 photos to impress them before they go to the next. Time is still short.
