Well going to some websites to check has risks too.  Even if it is a legit contest, which I have no reason to suspect it is anything but that, the fact that it charged an entry fee hit me a bit differently than most I suspect.  That's ok though.  People have been telling me Im different all my life, and it was in no way meant to be an attack of any sort on the original poster.  My question was simply to find out what the groups thoughts.  A better approach might have been a private email to list op

Charging to partiicpate made it a commercial venture for someone, even if it is on topic  As far as paying for someone to review your work, thanks but no thanks.  If they stand to make money from selling my work, then they need work to sell and the time to look at it to decide whether or not they like it should be no charge.  Now if you expect them to sit down and discuss with you how to improve your work, that's not part of the deal.  That you should expect to pay for, just as you would any other instruction.  Be ready though.  You may only get 2 or 3 photos to impress them before they go to the next.  Time is still short.

Paying for portifolo review reminds me a bit of the scam used on models.  You can be the next top model, IF you buy the photos we just took of you at inflated prices.  You can get work, (despite the fact that the nice woman is bigger than a barn and uglier than a bowling shoe,) if you just buy these prints.  Then suddenly no work comes.

I'm NOT an apologist. But I thought I'd look at the site and see.

The National Portrait Gallery in the U.K. runs a prestigious
Photographic Portrait competition and the registration fee is only £16 -
say $30?
