Maybe this depends on whether you regard the rule of thirds as a cardinal rule for making a picture or as an explanation of why a picture looks good.   
 
You can 'know' it is not a good thing to take a picture into the sun, and yet appreciate. or even take a 'contre jour shot' to highlight a blonde subject's hair.
 
Maybe Herschel would like to comment on his Tuna fish postcard which many of us saw. Was that a winner because he thought about the rule of thirds or because the judges knew about the rule?
