I need help and suggestions from someone who is gadget savy, please.

I'm looking for an iPod (MP3?) to download some DVDs and cds I have
containing lectures on mathematics to which I an listen while walking or
driving around. I looked at the players online and in a store, but have no
idea what I'm looking at or for, or what I need. Prices vary quite a bit
and I don't want to buy something that has bells and whistles I won't ever
use.
Any guidance or suggestions would really be appreciated. Thank you in
