I think the best way would be to publish the altered photo and the 
original. Put the first on the front page (assuming it looks better, 
more profitably attractive), and print the second on page two, with 
explanation. Perhaps make it smaller also.

As one grandmother said: "The reason why basketball players fight is 
there's only one ball. Give each one a ball and there would be peace."
