I told you I was grumpy. The spring weather here has gone from a sunny 75 degrees to a cloudy 20 degrees in TEN days. Not the direction I want to go. But I will attempt to temper my bad mood. I think I may have been irritated that the post card project, which I think is a fine idea, was generating a lot of enthusiasm but the forum input and gallery submissions have languished. I will address some of your points below with that in mind.

It appears that there is an imminent danger of moving the PF gallery from its public space to a private, elite space, free from critiques and filled, perhaps, with much mutual admiration on this forum for images that many of us will never see.

No chance the postcard exchange will ever become so big or well structured as to overtake the forum.
Probably right but it gives me an opportunity to make a point.

We've only done this once before and even then it was, what, 5 YEARS ago.
Yep, I suppose it was 5 years ago. But five years ago the gallery always had a full slate and there were a number of people who submitted, critiqued and discussed or argued, in some cases. I am hoping to get some of the enthusiasm for the postcard project directed to the forum and gallery. I have been with this forum quite a few years and really want it to revive.

The postcards are for fun...not to take away from anything going on here, merely to add to it.
Understood and appreciated.

Who knows, IT MIGHT EVEN SPARK SOME CREATIVITY amongst some folks.
Is creativity a criterion for submission? Many of us would like to see more creativity here and in our own work sometimes.

If you're afraid of missing out you ought to SIGN UP.
Thanks for the offer but it's not for me right now. I have too many things going on. That is one reason I appreciate the gallery. As I said, Andy and staff make it quick and easy to submit images.

All that being said, Mark Lent's suggestion makes sense to me. It wouldn't be that hard to submit your postcard images to the gallery; if you don't want to spoil the surprise just wait a week or so after mailing.
