Linux has become a lot better in the last 5 years
Sane is a great scanning interface
I have used RedHat for a long time (they were in the NCSU campus) and was very satisfied.
Even though Mandrake or Ubuntu seem to be easier for 1st time users and home applications.

As for scanners, a friend of mine runs Linux and, if I remember right,
his scanner works well.  It took a little doing but he got it running.
Next time I talk with him I'll ask which release of Linux and which
scanner, etc.....

I talked with my friend today and he has an Epson 2450 scanner running
with SuSE Linux 10.1  and it ran with SuSE 9.n.
