if your doing events it depends what kind, in my opinion.

but if you can get close to your subjects, why not shoot close at a wider
angle (28mm, 35mm, etc.)  shooting at 75mm all the time will get you a
compressed image.

if you want a budget lense, just get canon's standard 28-80 mm lense (it
comes on all there rebels for free)

if you want more zoom than that, you can get a standard canon 75-300mm
lense for about 300 bucks.

you might be able to get a fuller ranged canon lense (e.g. 28-200 or
300mm, but im sure thats not a "budget lense"

what is your budget for the lense anyway?

the difference between standard lenses and professional lenses is that
standard lenses have chromatic alterations (ever notice the changes of
colors at the edges of your pictures). theres other differences to (e.g.
sharpness).
