I generally try to keep three of them open - Actions, Layers and
History. I have quite a few Actions, which I've recorded as I needed
them (very easy to do), I don't use Layers a lot for corrections so I
like to be able to get to the history palette if I made a mistake a
few moments ago and want to undo it.
But, fortuntely, in more recent versions of PS one can keep certain
palettes on a dock, rather than open hogging monitor space. And one
can specify how many history items to keep in cache also.
And some people use a second monitor for their palettes and leave
their primary monitor for the image.
