One mechanism that was used in the early atomic era for very short
exposures was a sheet of glass and an explosive charge; powdered glass
is *much* less transmissive than solid glass :-).  I think this was
sometimes used as a capping mechanism on top of other very VERY fast
mechanisms that weren't completely opaque.
