Digital camera firmware is much less sophisticated than is the operating system on your computer.  Quite often, when a cf card is corrupted in some way, (usually the boot record but sometimes the image as well) it is because the card has been used past the limit of its memory capacity.  The camera then overwrites some other part of the card. This usually results in a corrupted image or your camera giving you a reformat message.
