Actually I understand that the Canon brand print cartridges for the i950 have chips in them that tell the software when the ink is low. They don't count nozzel firings like some Epson printers do.

Bob,
   That means the Canon printer like the desk top Epson printer count how many times a nozzle has fired to determine how much ink is left. Therefore the black ink cart was not filled to the right level or was the ink dried up inside the cart or leaked out/evaporated somehow. My Pepsi cans even though sealed leak fluid that I now have a collection of almost empty but sealed cans.
