    I do mostly portraits and nudes again white backgrounds. Once I have made a selection I save it as a path. Then activating it as a selection again I usually add a gradient background or another colored image into the space. I am an artistic oriented photographer.
    Most people I know extract images for illustrations for  text articles.

Deleting or erasing is destructive and you don't want to keep using the history tool.
so you must use the wand to select in a layer mask so that you can use shades of gray (Soft edge brush and low opacity brush) to neutralise the white high lights.
Another way is with Quick mask which does a similar job.
