The magic wand is only a selecting tool. What do you do once you've made the selection?
 
Deleting or erasing is destructive and you don't want to keep using the history tool.
so you must use the wand to select in a layer mask so that you can use shades of gray (Soft edge brush and low opacity brush) to neutralise the white high lights.
Another way is with Quick mask which does a similar job.
