I would add that most publications publishing photojournalism get digital photos in color and convert them as needed. I just sold some boxing photos, asked if they needed color or converted to black and white, and they said send color and they would do the conversion. I don't know of any publications that look down on conversions, as you suggest, they all use some converted digital images.

There's no difference between a simple conversion in PS and a black and white mode on the camera. Digital cameras don't shoot in black and white. The friend I previously referenced pushes through quite a bit in black and white, converted after the fact.
