Setting the white balance on the Nikon cameras with the white
fomecore is the only accurate way, in my experience. I tried
everything when I had one. And the guys at Woods Hole Oceanographic
Institution graphics department carry pieces of fomecore in their
bags everywhere they go for just that reason.
None of the canned settings will give satisfactory results.
