I've had several things framed in the past  by a neighbor of mine who ran a museum quality framing business.  When I went to move, they insisted on packing the pieces themselves.  They did not replace the glass (it's UV glass and plastic simply won't cut the mustard), instead they inserted a piece of foam core inside the border of the frame in front of the glass and another covering the back.  Then they securely wrapped each one in brown paper.  I shipped them through Mailboxes Etc. cross country without a nick.

Marilyn,
Find a shipping firm at the departure point that specializes in
shipping art. If the work is worth anything at all, it is worth the money it
costs to have it shipped properly.
