The tonal degradation is a product of combinatins of individual
pixels. Unless you are developing your own film, this problem will exist
whether you use a digital camera or not - since most labs now digitize your
image in one step or another before you get it back.
The biggest problem I have encountered is that most
digital sensors have greater depth of field at similar aperatures to film
cameras. This can be quite a problem when doing portraits (especially
since they also tend to be more light sensitive). Because of this, many of
my friends still use an rb or hassy in the studio and a digital on
location. Being able to see your pictures instantly surre saves many a
sleepless night.
