I respond:

With the help of a ex-wire service PJ friend, I've
been able to get a quick and dirty answer (the sort of
answer I was seeking) to my question. The problem is
my cheap flash, which doesn't allow me to set flash
compensation levels. Hence:

1) Get a flash unit which, unlike my Sunpak, allows
one to dial in flash compensation.

2) Meter ambient light manually.

3) Dial in (on the flash unit) something on the order
of -1+1/3 EV flash compensation.

4) Fire at will.

5) Expect pretty damn good results.

Then:

6) Continue to experiment.

      --Flash and ambient compensation levels.
      --Off-camera TTL flash w/sync cord.
      --Bounce flash.
