Try to avoid signing any contract that requires you to transfer your copyright to the paper.

If the paper is even moderately professional in the way it handles you and its employees, ask for a review at 6 months so you can get a handle on how they feel about your work.

Figure out who the real boss is and play nice with that person.

Check out http://www.sportsshooter.com sometime soon and look at the sports shooting in the largest paper you can get near every day for a while.
