$13/hr is almost respectable in local newspapering, but get yourself
a pro quality digital camera and long zoom as soon as you can find
the money so you don't have to give up your film to him.
Remember that the best sports pix have the ball/puck/etc and a face
in them. And always get a couple of shots of the fans while you're
there. Get a roster of the players from the organizers as soon as
you arrive, make sure you know who the top players are, their numbers
etc. and concentrate on getting a good action shot of one of them.
Learn how the games are played and what's important in the strategy
on the field. Some games have to be shot wide open at 400 ISO in
order to stop motion, night games will require very fast lenses and
very high ISOs - 3200.
Keep your batteries charged and stay alert throughout. Keep your
mileage and expect reimbursement for it too.
