RE: How do you address this?

Whenever that happened to me, I'd say sure, of course. Then later I tried to find out something about the requestor. If he or she turned out to be a potential client, then I'd send a complimentary pic & suggest I might be able to help with some additional photographic needs in the future, and perhaps I could stop by to show some further samples of my work. If the person was just the average Joe, I'd send a photo, or not, depending on how nice he or she asked. There aren't any hard and fast rules. You just learn to play it by ear. But I always tried to be low-keyed, discreet, thoroughly professional. No smart comments, no sarcasm, no confrontation. You never know who might be eavesdropping. This isn't anything but taking care of business.

No doubt, we have all been in this situation:

You're covering an event, whether for the paper or perhaps a private
event your hired to shoot. Up walks a guest, he/she hands you his/her
business card and asks if you'll send them their picture.

How do you handle this? Here we are walking about with a several grand
in equipment and years of experience - yet with the "digital age" upon
us, people just think it's no problem to ask for us to just turn over
our profits and support everyone else?

We have rent, insurance, medical bills, etc just like they do... yet do
they just turn over their products to people who ask for them?

One guy in question owns a car dealership - so I replied "Sure, once you
just give me one of those nice spank'in new Mercedes you've got in your
showroom"

I mean, it is fair yes? I sell photographs, he sells cars, right?
So... logic dictates that if he thinks he can just ask for the product I
sell for free then I should be able to request the same.....

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks.

Michael
