You are probably right, Steve.

However, it seems to me that the reason for need for the parallel approach of the light rays to a CCD though is well explained and illustrated in the megapixel.net article
If the rays do not arrive vertically they will go in at an angle (doh!!) and hit the sensor through the wrong colour filter, producing a distortion in the image's colour.
