I can't ever recall reading how a master photographer talking about how vital this "rule" was when composing his/her image, but then I'm probably wrong!
Still perhaps it can help someone!

You have just met the difference between Engineers and Scientists!
To an engineer, 1 + 1 = 3 can indeed correct for large enough values of 1.
