I've used a spray can, since I don't do it very often and hence
haven't invested in the hardware to do it from plain varnish.  But a
real sprayer system gives you more choice of varnish and costs less
per print if you use it much.  

In either case you'll want a spray booth, too.  This not stuff to let
float around your studio, or to breathe!
