David, While bright, the image was in fact fairly dim. This was a result of the
fact that the main lens was af f/8 ... but the secondary lens was at f/16 and
then the image of the sun was blown up to pretty large size ... well, about 2.5
inch or 30mm diameter.
But the advice is always appropriate. Never look at the Sun without proper
protection.
