Seems we´re on the right track, then. Surely the general idea behind it all did occur to several people independently; it does seem universal. The trick is to express it succinctly and memorably.

Never heard of Mencken ... but apparently he has at least four similar
quotes.

I'm guessing the first is the most accurate - or did he use similar
saying refining them (and simplifying them) with each iteration? More
likely others have latched on to the eternal truth of that part.
Science is full of simple explanations - they are all wrong.  Above
these are more comples explanations that are also wrong.  With words
we can only ever approximate the complexity of nature, never hold it
;o)

Yup, similar in sentiment ... different in words.
