Brita filters have a very short life (less than 100 gal)
Get one of those sold at lowes or home depot

They can't hurt. Anything that traps foreign objects, grit, dirt, etc. is helpful. The best method, though, is an in-line filter like you can get at Home Depot or Lowes. I use the charcoal filter insert.
