...One question though. Are Brita style tap mounted filters of any benefit in a darkroom?

They can't hurt. Anything that traps foreign objects, grit, dirt, etc. is helpful. The best method, though, is an in-line filter like you can get at Home Depot or Lowes. I use the charcoal filter insert.
