Digital Rebel has shortcomings; you cannot choose the autofocus mode in
manual modes. Also there is no exposure compensation for flash.

Digital Rebel (or the EOS 300D -- I believe -- outside the US) is the 10D in
plastic clothing. Less than a kilobuck.

Digital may NOW be there for you.
