I believe that it ranks at the top of the list with any standard advertising
you do.  There are two ways to look at it:

1)  I only got a few sales from the web site last year.  I don't think it's
worth it.
2)  Wow!  I got a few sales from my web site last year that I wouldn't have
had it I didn't have the web site!

A web site, today, is like a business card.  It's not a question of whether
or not you need one.  It's only a question of how big, extensive, inclusive
or whatever you need.

You can get a free hosting account in many places and use it as a place to
showcase some of your work, contain basic contact information and what not.
You've lost nothing more than the time it took to create it, and if you
don't rely on it for a large portion of your sales then you don't need to
spend a lot of time updating it.

I use mine as a major marketing asset to my business.  The vast majority of
my contacts are made online, and most of my work (including submissions,
invoicing, etc) are done online as well.  Others prefer to use more
traditional methods that work well for them
