RE: is that REAL film grain?

An unexposed film which is properly developed and fixed has no silver and if
it is C-41 it will not have any colour coupled dye present. So what is
visible there looks like the film backing material at high magnification it
is not grain at all.

If you want to see grain get a tri-x or hp5 film and underexpose in a camera
at some objects then over develop at 30,000 iso in warm water with slightly
dilute developer.

Examine with a hand lens or microscope and you will see largish irregular
specks of silver metal lodged in the emulsion.

They are more common in highlights and less common or absent in shadows.

In colour films there are no grains of silver but there are blobs of colour
instead as these form at the same time and place as the silver grains during
development but the bleach-fix removes all the silver, both the unexposed
halide (the fix part) and the silver metal (the bleach part).

Subject: is that REAL film grain?

hi all (again)

following this link will get you to a scanned piece of negative that was not
exposed, but developed normally...
http://groups.msn.com/clenchedteethphotography/files1.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&;
PhotoID=579

it is a full frame scan of a piece of konica's VX-400 c-41 processed film,
that was inverted and resized from a 5x7 inch size to a 72dpi and 480 pixels
size in the smaller dimension.

i did the scanning in order to get a view of real film grain, and have it in
my image librar/tool case for feature use...but it was a suprise for me i
got this kind of artifact!

so, the real big question becomes : is that what real film grain looks like?

thansk, kostas
