The life you describe sounds very much like Osa and Martin Johnson's story. However, she died in 1953 and he preceded her. This may not be the woman you were referring to but, if you are not familiar with their work, you should research them. They were world famous as explorers, film makers and photographers in the earlier part of the 20th century.
