I think you are being a little hard on people who responded to a request for information.  Googling on this is not as easy as all that:  until you have some reference points you might not know where to start.

I'd not even bothered to think about History of Photography AS ART till reading the thread.

has for me been a good starting point.  


One thing is for sure:  it started before 1900!!!

Another thing ... I'm now left wondering how much photography was responsible for "real" artists movement away from realism:  as if maybe the photographic process forced painters to find new pastures in the face of a superior force :-O


I for one welcome suggestions from others about where to start/progress ... especially from you I should add!
