The History of Photography is a huge field of study. My recommendation is to pick an entry point that interests you and start there.
Someone recommended Naomi Rosenblum's History, and it's as good an overview as any. Abigail Solomon-Godeau (sp?) has a good book or two on Postmodernism.
It's like the joke about eating an elephant....one bite at a time.
