I don't know about the D1x, but the D30/D60 use a .5" chip, that's like shooting with 110 film (but better resolving power of course), which results in more DOF.

Really?  While there is increased DOF it is no where near what you describe.
I have shot with a D60 (my assistant has one) and I own a D1x and it
certainly does NOT look like your shooting at f16 all the time.  Thatıs
plain silly...
