Bob, thanks for the comments. I too have marveled at how our opinions of images have almost always been opposite. The sunglasses were on the table when I saw this scene but I placed them at this angle on purpose to be perpendicular to the slats in the deck boards. I felt there were too many lines heading into the top right corner and I prefer to have something in the image to bring the eye  in more than one direction. That's the same reason I cropped the top as I did. I tried cropping the top as you suggest but I found it made the shadows too abstract for my liking. I wanted the image to give the feeling of being there on the deck as opposed to being a purely graphic shot.
