something is hosed. I verified that the pam module was indeed doing
it's job by puting the authorization information back into local files
and login worked just as it should... sorry to have bothered anyone
with this.

passwd: files ldapand I have verified that this does work. Anyone got any ideas?
Oh and I did look at the faq and manual, hopefully I am not blind.
