no -N option anymore.  Here is another variation:  (After making the 
change to pam_unix and nis)  If, as root, I want to change a user's 
password:

root> passwd beth
Changing password for user beth
New UNIX password:
Retype new UNIX password:
RPC: Can't encode arguments
The password has not been changed on gandalf.pns.anl.gov.
passwd: Failed preliminary check by password service

but using yppasswd will work.
