Isn't this what /bin/tr is there for? sed -e 'y/ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ/abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz/' is equivalent to /bin/tr '[A-Z]' '[a-z]' The latter, IMHO, is easier on the eyes, with less room for error than the former.
