This was my initial attraction to nntpcache as well.  We have NNTP access
from two sources (one with about 8000 groups one with about 15000 groups)
and I'd been hoping that NNTP cache would give me some redundancy if one of
my feeds went down.

Once I thought it through it seemed that it would be a fairly tricky thing
to setup but if it could be done I would LOVE IT!
