RedHat 7, nntpcached keeps core dumping

I've tried installing the 2.3.3 RPM and the 2.3.3 compiled binaries.

The nntpcached man page says this:

      -c config_file
              Specify an alternative configuration file (normally
              /usr/local/etc/nntpcache/config). You must  specify
              the FULL PATH

I can't find a file called config anywhere, or directions how to create one.
for now, I assume it's using /usr/local/etc/nntpcache/nntpcache.config-dist.

any suggestions would be appreciated...
