To answer your first point, I did. I changed it to 100 to test.

One of my newsservers is news.unina.it (and that has well over 3000
newsgroups anyhow)

When you say connect properly to a server, I assume you mean, have it listed
in nntpcache.servers (whiich I have done).

Any more ideas anyone?
