Thanks for the email --- I do want to assure everyone that I have no smoking gun on this error: It may not be nntpcache, but one symptom is that I can avoid the error by taking nntpcache out of the loop. It is probably involved, but could well be acting correctly and that is what is causing the problems for GNUS. >>>>> "J" == Julian Assange <proff@iq.org> writes: J> 2.4.0b[12] includes a y2k fix. what version of nntpcache are J> you using? 2.4.0b1 from the website. It has me wondering about other potential problems where software on Y2K compliant systems may encounter data from non-compliant systems, but some may handle the problems in different and incompatible ways. To complete the picture, I am using bind-8.2.1-7mdk sendmail-8.9.3-11mdk emacs-20.4-1mdk gnus-5.8.2 Bind reports too many lame servers to be accurate, but I get this behaviour whether I use my local caching nameserver or if I use my ISP's nameserver, and nslookup appears to work fine after I restarted named. Gnus can read from any other nntp servers, but *sometimes* jams while accessing my localhost nntpcache until I rebuild cache.mmap. KNews and telnet have no trouble reading from nntpcache while gnus thinks it is hung. When it is hung, the process table says it has an active task merging active from news.freshmeat.net, which is not my first nntp server (or my last). I have also noticed that there is one specific correspondent of mine who appears to be sending messages dated 100 AD, but no one else on our mailing list is seeing this (I am the only one using GNUS) Since that is an email symptom, it is either unrelated to the nntpcached problem, or shows that nntpcached is not involved in the bug. The problem is not serious, so don't lose sleep over it. If anyone else notices any similar behaviour, let us know and perhaps if we can gather some data from alternate configurations we can spot the error. -- Gary Lawrence Murphy <garym@canada.com> TeleDynamics Communications Inc Business Telecom Services : Internet Consulting : http://www.teledyn.com Linux/GNU Education Group: http://www.egroups.com/group/linux-education/ "Computers are useless.
